Knowing William, it seems that he almost knowingly took the risk--I think deep down inside, or maybe not so deep down, actually, he WANTED to appear on disgracepoint. How else do you explain his choice to pick such a huge rock?

Across the surface of the water? I think the stone has to skip at least once for it to count as across the surface. I think what we have here is a case of Pastor William trying to stone a fish that was swimming by in the water :)
